Probability in Biology : The Case of Fitness Roberta
نویسنده
چکیده
The biological sciences make extensive use of probabilities, whether evolutionary biology, ecology, molecular biology, developmental biology, genetics, physiology, paleobiology, medicine, neurobiology, etc., and whether as parts of formal theoretical models or as parts of less formal mechanistic models. Organisms just don’t seem to behave in determinate and fully regular ways. In principle, then, the discussion of probability in biology is a massive topic.

متن کاملProbability, Indeterminism and Biological Processes
Probability and indeterminism have always been core philosophical themes. Biology provides an interesting case study to explore these themes. First, biology is teeming with probabilities, and so a crucial question in the foundations of biology is how to understand these probabilities. Second, philosophers want to know whether the processes investigated by one of the major sciences – biology – a...
متن کاملStroke and drivers' job fitness
Introduction: Stroke is considered a relatively common disease in developing societies. This disease is one of The most important causes for sudden non-cardiac incapacity. On the other hand, the disease can naturally occur in working age and in drivers. Therefore evaluation the fitness for work in a driver with a history of stroke can be a major challenge for the occupational health and r...
متن کاملOne-third rules with equality: Second-order evolutionary stability conditions in finite populations.
The one-third law of evolutionary dynamics [Nowak et al. 2004. Emergence of cooperation and evolutionary stability in finite populations. Nature 428, 246-650] describes a robustness criterion for evolution in a finite population: If at an A-frequency of 1/3, the fitness of an A player is greater (smaller) than the fitness of a B player, then a single A mutant that appears in a population of oth...
متن کاملHeterogeneity in background fitness acts as a suppressor of selection.
We introduce the concept of heterogeneity in background fitness to evolutionary dynamics in finite populations. Background fitness is specific to an individual but not linked to its strategy. It can be thought of as a property that is related to the physical or societal position of an individual, but is not dependent on the strategy that is adopted in the evolutionary process under consideratio...
